Greenhouse Run and Gardening
I have to say, it was wonderful to have Casey home all weekend, without church duties, on this weekend off. Today in particular, we spent it mostly together: a relaxing lunch at LA's Place in Pike Lake, followed by our annual 100+ mile round-trip trek to Byrn's up in Zim to stock the garden. We will leave shortly for a Mother's Day dinner with the kids at the new Mexican restaurant in the Fitger's Mall.
In between, it was garden work that occupied our time, and that is refreshing indeed. This time of year I am always a bit torn between the garden outside and duties surrounding design and client work - or the process of learning more to improve the same - inside. Often I'm grateful when the weather turns sour and makes the decision for me. But then there are these spectacular days of warm temps (by my standards, anyway) and sunshine. I suppose in a way they make my decision for me, too. Especially on a Sunday, when garden toil, which somehow seems to me more amenable to the concept of the Sabbath, nudges out the sort of work that, while I enjoy it a great deal, also carries the weight and anxiety of earning a living on it's shoulders. It's possible - maybe likely - that working in the garden, a kind of labor far more natural and consuming in Jesus' day than any of the work I do for a living, also defies the gracious commands of Sabbath rest. I must not take that possibility lightly. Still, it is a pleasant diversion from normal cares, especially when we are out there together as we were today.
But the busy-ness of today negated my Sunday nap, and that is not good. I find myself sleepy as I type here, waiting for Casey to get ready to leave for dinner. Maybe just a little cat-nap here in my chair...
